Community Visioning

Kendall Mountain Recreation Area

In the fall of 2017, the Town of Silverton conducted a series of community visioning sessions and online surveys to develop a vision for the future of Kendall Mountain Recreation Area (KMRA), a Town owned and operated park and ski area. Subsequently, the Town Council approved a Request for Proposals for a viability study, and a firm called SE Group was hired to complete the project. The study, released in November 2018, confirmed a basis for expanding skiing and other four season recreational opportunities on Kendall Mountain. In June of 2019, per the request of the Town Council, a Kendall Mountain Recreation Area Master Plan Committee (KMRAMPC) was formed to conduct further research and make recommendations to the Town Trustees on the KMRA master planning effort. This citizen advisory group is currently spearheading a Request for Information (RFI) process to explore the possibilities and gauge interest from potential partners who can help carry the community’s vision for KMRA forward. The RFI and viability study are posted below along with other documentation of the process to date. For more information visit www.skikendall.com or email KMRAMasterPlanCommittee@silverton.co.us.

KMRA Request for Information

The KMRA Master Plan Request for Information deadline was July 17, 2020. A total of five responses were received from the following entities:

•    Bonsai Design
•    DHM Design
•    Maly Marketing
•    Mountain Capital Partners
•    Silverton Mountain

The KMRA Master Plan Committee discussed these responses in their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, 8/4/20. The group intends to invite the two ski area operators who responded - Mountain Capital Partners and Silverton Mountain - to join them at future meetings to explore their vision for expanded four-season recreation at Kendall and what a possible partnership for this project might look like. Meeting times for these conversations are yet to be determined. It is important to note that the KMRAMPC is still in a research, information gathering and idea generation stage and no particular course of action has been determined at this time.

Printed copies of the RFI responses are available for review at Town Hall, or at the link below. The public is welcome to observe KMRAMPC meetings which are currently taking place via Zoom. Silverton Area Trails Plan

After public meetings about Kendall Mountain Recreation Areauncovered considerable community interest in trails, the Town of Silverton began hosting trails visioning sessions in February 2018 with a goal of gathering information on existing non-motorized trails in San Juan County, as well as ideas for new trail development. A Trails Task Force was then formed to develop a master plan, including representatives from Town of Silverton, San Juan County, San Juan Regional Planning Commission, San Juan Development Association, Silverton Area Chamber of Commerce, Mountain Studies Institute, Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run and Silverton Singletrack Society. The efforts of this group will inform a number of planning initiatives, including the San Juan County master plan, Kendall Mountain Recreation Area master plan, BLM Gunnison Field Office travel management plan, and USFS Columbine Ranger District recreation plan update. The draft 2019 Silverton Area Trails Plan was presented at a community meeting on December 17, 2018, and a month long public comment period followed. The plan wasrevised based on comments received, and a final version presentedTown Trustees, County Commissioners and the San Juan Regional Planning Commission. The plan was approved unanimously ata joint special meeting of the Town and Countywith a public hearing on February 27, 2019.
